Over time, Bonaventure has made itself a sought-after touristic destination, thanks to the graceful union of nature and culture it offers. Founded in 1760 by Acadians fleeing deportation, Bonaventure still retains the colours of its origins with a population that is predominantly composed of Acadian descendants from the villages of Beaubassin, Grand-Pré and Port-Royal. Pride for this heritage is apparent in the toponymy and the ever-present Acadian flag. It can also be observed in various cultural and popular celebrations, in the vocabulary, the accent and, of course, in the hearts of the people.
The Musée acadien du Québec eloquently relates this cultural treasure through its three exhibits, its program of free onsite shows, and its boutiques featuring original creations and regional products. Other boutiques and workshops are open to you, including Les Cuirs fins de la mer (a fish leather boutique) and its exclusive products. Stage left and right, the Théâtre de la Petite Marée features joyful and spirited adaptations of classical youth literature for the whole family. Heritage-wise, a magnificent stone church graces the entrance to the Grand-Pré Street, where the architectural heritage is renewed in shingles and colours.
Bonaventure, with its generous nature, offers a sandy, well-equipped beach, excellent quality and mild-temperature waters, and a extraordinarily clear river where one can relax, be it in a canoe or a kayak or fly-fishing for salmon. Cyclists can streak through the Route verte and its alternate paths to discover bewildering and picturesque hinterland, while navigators will opt for the marina, a true haven with a brand-new harbour master’s office. The coast, the barachois, the river delta and the woods are nesting areas attracting bird-watchers, while the Bioparc, with its living collection, features the five Gaspesian ecosystems. The Fauvel golf course delights its players with its exceptional architecture and quality greens. To loosen your limbs, you can play tennis or join your kids in one of the parks at your disposal.
In addition to having diversified and quality cuisine, Bonaventure contains various lodging establishments, which are characterised by a warm welcome and professional service. You can also let yourself be tempted by a magnificent seaside campsite or opt for a woodsy site near the Bonaventure River. A stop at the tourist reception centre will provide you with all the information required to experience a memorable stay in the region.
